Astronomy Test/Quiz & Answers

This is an astronomy test we took in class. Instructor was pulling questions from her “Instructor Book” and giving us the tests and quizzes. I am sure these questions and answers will help you to answer your online or in class quizzes and tests. This kind of specific information does not change for every astronomy class. All the questions and answers are universal and there is a big chance that you will see these in your class if you are taking any astronomy.

Well I have done my part and posted it all! Now copy paste it, print it or share it with anyone. Happy studying 🙂

Here are the questions and answers in italic form

If the Moon is relatively far from the earth, so that the umbra does not reach the earth, someone directly behind the umbra will see
An annular eclipse.

By locating the north celestial pole (NCP) in the sky, how can you determine your latitude?
The altitude of the NCP is the same as your latitude.

The Sun never goes in
retrograde motion

In what sense are we “star stuff”?
Nearly every atom from which we are made was once inside of a star.

We see essentially the same face of the Moon at all times because the Moon’s
rotational and orbital periods are equal

It takes the earth to complete one orbit around the Sun
One year

The following statement about the Moon is true
The Moon’s distance from the earth varies during its orbit.

What is an astronomical unit?
The average distance from the earth to the Sun

If the Moon is rising at midnight
the phase of the Moon must be third quarter.

At approximately midnight
a full moon would be on your meridian

If it is midnight in New York
it is daytime in Sydney, Australia.

What conditions are required for a lunar eclipse?
The phase of the Moon must be full, and the nodes of the Moon’s orbit must be nearly aligned with the earth and the Sun.

What makes the North Star, Polaris, special?
It appears very near the north celestial pole.

Why is it summer in the Northern Hemisphere when it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere?
The Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun and receives more direct sunlight.

What is the ecliptic plane?
The plane of the earth’s orbit around the Sun

The following statement about lunar phases is true
It is possible to have two full moons during January, but not during February.

Our solar system consists of
The Sun and all the objects that orbit it.

The modern definition of a constellation is:
a region of the celestial sphere

If the Moon is setting at 6 A.M.,
the phase of the Moon must be full.

The precession of the Moon’s nodes means that
the eclipse seasons occur less than 6 months apart.

Which of the following best describes what we mean by the universe?
the sum total of all matter and energy

Our solar system is located within the Milky Way Galaxy?
about two-thirds of the way from the center of the galaxy to the outskirts of the galactic disk

What do we mean when we say that the universe is expanding?
Average distances between galaxies are increasing.

Orion is visible on winter evenings but not summer evenings because of
the location of the earth in its orbit.

You are standing on the earth’s equator. Which way is Polaris, the North star?
on the northern horizon

Half moon is not a phase of the Moon

A first quarter moon rises at approximately at

If the Moon rises around 3 A.M., its phase must be
waning crescent.

What is the ecliptic?
the Sun’s apparent path along the celestial sphere

Your “address” in the correct order:
you, Earth, solar system, Milky Way, Local Group, Local Supercluster

If the Moon is setting at noon, the phase of the Moon must be
third quarter.

What causes the apparent retrograde motion of the planets?
As the earth passes another planet, the other planet appears to move backward with respect to the background stars, but the planet’s motion does not really change.

The closer a star is to us, the more parallax it exhibits.
This is true.

A solar eclipse occurs only when
the Moon is new.

Why do we have seasons on Earth?
As the earth goes around the Sun and the earth’s axis remains pointed toward Polaris, the Northern and Southern hemispheres alternately receive more and less direct sunlight.

Approximately how fast are you moving with the rotation of the earth?
1,300 km/hr

A typical galaxy is a
collection of a few hundred million to a trillion or more stars, bound together by gravity.

What happens during the apparent retrograde motion of a planet?
The planet appears to move eastward with respect to the stars over a period of many nights.

What conditions are required for a solar eclipse?
The phase of the Moon must be new, and the nodes of the Moon’s orbit must be nearly aligned with the earth and the Sun.

We describe a position on the earth’s surface by
stating its latitude and longitude.

Suppose you live on the Moon. How long is a day (i.e., from sunrise to sunrise)?
a lunar month

In addition to the conditions required for any solar eclipse, what must also be true in order for you to observe a total solar eclipse?
The Moon’s umbra must touch the area where you are located.

In which direction does a quarter moon rise?

The following statement about the Milky Way Galaxy is not true
Our solar system is located very close to the center of the Milky Way Galaxy.

When are eclipse seasons?
When the nodes of the Moon’s orbit are nearly aligned with the Sun

The following correctly describes the meridian in your sky
a half-circle extending from your horizon due north, through your zenith, to your horizon due south

What is the Sun mainly made of?
hydrogen and helium

What do astronomers mean by the Big Bang?
The event that marked the beginning of the expansion of the universe
